Forty years ago we were introduced to archeology via the Peninsular Archaeological Society in St. Petersburg, Florida. Since that beginning, our interest in prehistoric Native Americans has never diminished. As opposed to many collectors, the thrust of our interest has always been in finding and collecting artifacts other than points. However, we too often experienced that special magical aura of finding and touching a point that had not been used for hundreds to thousands of years. Yet, we also felt this same aura transcended into many other lithic, bone, shell and pottery artifacts. Living in Florida provided a very unique opportunity to collect shell artifacts from numerous shell middens located along coastal and aquatic areas. Being professional marine biologists further emphasized our interest in seeking and understanding artifacts made from shell. This interest has transcended into our book “Shell Artifacts”.
We dedicate this manual to those professional and avocational archeologists who touched our lives and help sustain our interest over the years. People like Bud Nelson, Lee Feder, Walter Askew, Les Trafton, Vince Runowich, Al Goodyear, Loren Blakeley, Matt Richards. Paul Lien, Ray Willams, Major George and Nelly Robinson, Ray and Joan Day, Brian Evensen, Leonard Lee, the Andrew sisters, Bill and Mary King, Mark Winterbottom, Joe Alexander, Bill Dayton and many others. A very special dedication is extended to Leo and Minnie Voltz who personally guided us into this very interesting and educational hobby. We spent many days together in fields, swamps, and shorelines searching for those special elusive artifacts. Those very special days with our very special friends will never be forgotten.

This is not your usual picture book like many other artifact publications nor is it a pricing guide. It is written in simple but very descriptive language. Many items are described in depth including beads, money, tools, drinking cups, drills, fishing weights, effigies. hammers and much more. It is intended to serve as a manual for learning about the many shell artifacts including how they were made, where the shell came from, how they were used and when they were used. Some concepts are theoretical in an effort to provide “food for further thought”. This is an excellent reference manual for avocational and professional archeologists.
